Welcome to the Floodplain Mapping Website
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently released final versions of new Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for unincorporated Dane County. FEMA has given Dane County a deadline of January 2, 2009 to adopt the new maps in order to remain eligible for the National Flood Insurance Program. These maps not only serve to identify properties eligible for flood insurance, but also serve as the basis for county and municipal floodplain zoning ordinances.
For unincorporated Dane County, final maps are essentially similar to preliminary drafts submitted for public review and comment between February and May of 2007. The public review period for the maps is now closed, all appeals have been reviewed by the Wisconsin DNR and FEMA has now made all final mapping decisions. More information about the floodplain mapping update project is available from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
If you have reason to believe that the final maps do not accurately reflect flood conditions on your property, you have a couple of options:
- If you already have a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) or Letter of Map Revision due to Fill (LOMR-F) from FEMA, check the Final Summary of Map Actions to see if your LOMA/LOMR-F was incorporated, not incorporated and will be reissued, or superceded.
- If you do not already have a Letter of Map Amendment, you may apply for one directly from FEMA
On October 28, 2008, the Dane County Zoning and Land Regulations Committee (ZLR) will hold a public hearing on amending Chapter 17, Dane County Code, to adopt the new maps. Once the new maps are adopted by the Dane County Board of Supervisors, updated floodplain mapping will also be available on Dane County's DCIMap.
Below are online copies of all available Final FIRM maps for Dane County in Acrobat PDF format.
Some of these files are quite large (17 MB). Depending on the speed of your internet connection, they may
take as long as 15 minutes or more to download. You will probably get the best results if you right-mouse-click
and select "save target as," then save the file to your hard drive. You may want to review
the Summary of Map Actions first to see if there are significant changes in your area. The Flood Insurance
Study provides detailed information about how these maps were created.
For incorporated cities and villages, contact your local floodplain zoning agency for more information.
