Let's Plan and Govern Together
Development issues cross governmental boundaries as fast as a
car can zip from the Town of Springfield into Madison. A large, new housing subdivision, for example, puts pressure on roads, schools and farmland. In order to promote more sensible growth, we need to work together to better coordinate and cooperate on land issues. To accomplish this, I propose to: Work with towns to adopt a Community Impact Approach to local planning. Communities that adopt this approach will have more authority over local land use decisions, and will receive I priority for county funded road improvement and other assistance.![]() |
Encourage neighboring communities to make inter-governmental agreements with each other regarding growth-related issues of common concern.
Assist cities, villages and towns to develop annexation policies that I promote sensible, efficient growth.
Address growth issues beyond Dane County's borders and promote multi-county planning.
Improve the Way We Do Business
County government needs to upgrade the way it does business. We need to streamline processes, use information technologies, and spend money wisely. We will take steps to:
Streamline the county's development procedures to better assist the public and save time and dollars for everyone.Improve public access to land use information by working with UW-Madison and others to make better use of computer technology to store and organize information, putting information on the county's web site, and by preparing handouts and checklists on the county's land development process.
We All Have Something To Do
I promise to continue to expand opportunities for our citizens to shape Dane County's future. To do this, I will:
Hold an annual Design Dane! public forum to review our progress in growing sensibly.Appoint a Citizen Land Use Commission to monitor progress and issue a "State of the Land" report card to the County Board and me.
Provide land use planning, education and technical assistance at the grass roots level with a computer assisted planning demonstration project, training workshops, and a speakers bureau.
Continue to provide varied opportunities for people to listen, volunteer, interact and exchange ideas on growth issues.
Sponsor a Design Dane! search for citizens to showcase their favorite places in Dane County.
