The Home Detention Program (HDP) began in 1975 as an alternative to detention or non-secure placement of youth. By providing a Community Youth Worker to assist the parent(s) in providing adequate supervision and monitoring to a juvenile, the program:
In more recent years, the Home Detention Program has been able to "bridge" the gap between pre-disposition situations and the implementation of longer-term supervision and support services by providing a Community Youth Worker to help maintain the situation at home pending services being in place. Juveniles are assigned to the Home Detention Program by the juvenile court and may remain under that interim supervision for 20-120 days (depending on the nature of the situation and need for assistance). In 1998, HDP served 220 juveniles, with approximately 75% of those being males.
