Careful readers will notice a new name on the list of Park Commissioners. Kay Bongers, a long-time Adult Conservation Team volunteer, was recently appointed to the Park Commission by Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk. The addition of a skilled and knowledgeable volunteer to the Commission will bring a new perspective to their discussions and decisions. We are so pleased and proud that Kay was appointed! I feel like all Adult Conservation Team volunteers have been recognized and honored by this appointment, and deservedly so.

Nine Springs E-Way, McCoy Rd: Field Work sponsored by the Nine Springs Network on October 10 and November 14, from 9:00-noon. Meet along the north side of McCoy Rd. between Syene Rd. and Hwy. 14, just west of the railroad tracks. Tools provided. The Network also meets the third Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the All Saint’s Lutheran Church in Fitchburg. Contact Victoria Jagar at 255-7631 for information about the Nine Springs Network.
Pheasant Branch Conservancy: October 3 and 17, 9:00-12:00. From Century Ave. in Middleton, go north on Pheasant Branch Rd about one mile. Parking lot is on the right (east) side of the road.
Planting a prairie: Scatter seeds in the Ice Age Trail Junction Area near Badger Prairie Park; November 18 and 21, 12:30-3:30. Advance registration required.
Seed cleaning: This is fun, but dusty and noisy work. It’s an important part of our natural areas restoration program. We use a chipper-shredder, fanning mills and other ingenious devices to separate seeds from seed heads and other chaff. If you have allergies or any respiratory problems, please volunteer for something else. All workdays are 9:00-12:00 and 12:30-3:30 (the starred dates begin at 10:30). You may sign up for morning and/or afternoon shifts.
December: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15*, 16, 17
January: 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19*, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28
* Start time is 10:30, not 9:00 a.m.
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
Do you want to help but prefer indoor work to hacking honeysuckle? You can come in on a regular basis and help with data entry and other office work. Experience with computers, especially Microsoft Access, would be great but we will train. Come join our congenial office!
RE: The Oft-Disrespected Buckthorn
(A Poem by Volunteer Stump-Treater Ken Siemers)
Disparage not Rhamnus cathartica,
Though some want it moved to Antarctica.
For all beings there is a reason,
If only to keep stump-treaters busy in season.
