Volunteers in ACTION

Dane County Parks thanks the volunteers, both individuals and groups, who participated in these projects.

The Stoughton River Trail Task Force sponsored a workday at Viking Park on March 7. Thirteen people joined Ken LePine and cut brush to clear part of the trail connecting the park with the urban trail. Additional workdays will be held later this year. Led by Nancy Hagen, volunteers included Megan Dean, Gianna Taylor, Matthew Clark, Judy Larson-Clements, Maureen & Reid Bettilyon, Ralph & Tom Erickson, Chris Jacobsen, Mike Connor, Doug Davis, Jim Wilcox and Dan Oakland.

Nordic Ski Patrol services were provided at Indian Lake Park this past December and January by members of the Madison Nordic Ski Patrol. Despite the inconsistent snow, patrollers were able to help over several weekends. Thanks to Roy Johnson, David Robb, Heidi Becker, Dorothy Dumontier, Pat Hackworthy and patrol captain John Neis.

Madison West Kiwanians Marv Beatty, Marvin Heiser, John C. Roberts and Richard Stauber continued their field work project in the Jenni & Kyle Preserve in the Nine Springs E-Way this winter.

Two expos were staffed with the help of volunteers this winter. Visitors to the WHA Garden Expo met with Ken & Gina Schumacher, Carol Schiller, Donna Winter, Renae Alswager-Klein, Mary Conroy, Merle & Angie Goth, Ken Siemers and Cheri & Dave Lemke. Diane Kaderavek, Bill Muehl and Theresa Kmiec helped at Canoecopia, where we raffled off a canoe to benefit the Heritage Center.

Bill Muehl volunteered his photographic services to take portraits of the staff of Dane County Parks. The portraits will be framed simply and displayed at the department. Bill has managed to make us all look terrific.

The Dane County Conservation League cleared box elders at Indian Lake Park, opening up the vista of the lake. The project had been on our list for several years, so it's great to have it completed. Members of the DCCL who participated were Lowell Carter, Don Hammes, Steve Kellog, Bob Zimmerman, George Bunders, Bob Schlotthauer, Bid Schlotthauer, Bill Schlotthauer, Phil Kalscheur, Dave Wilken and Wayne Fosdal.

Workparties led by Mary Tremaine at Lake Farm Park have been held in January, February and March. The work has focused on the clearing and opening up the lake shore path. Mary, a volunteer natural areas manager, was joined by Guerdon Coombs, Crystal Kagy, Robin Piper, Rob Schoenbrun, Eunice & Carroll Holtz, and Ken Siemers treating stumps.

The bluebird trail at Token Creek is being taken over by Megan Yost. Dorothy Haines, who had managed the trail for years, will orient Megan. The response to a recruitment notice in the Audubon Society's newsletter was very gratifying; it's encouraging to see all the interest in bluebirds. Ann Wick, who runs the bluebird trail at Walking Iron, is taking over part of the trail at Indian Lake near the parking lot, where the habitat seems suitable for bluebirds.
