In 2013, there will be no Cooperative Aerial Gypsy Moth Suppression Program
treatment. Similar to Gypsy moth surveys in 2011, 2012 surveys indicated that
the over winter population was lower than levels seen over the last few years.
Residents are reminded to report nuisance populations to their local
municipality. Please refer to http://gypsymoth.wi.gov/ for more information on the Cooperative
Suppression Program and for ways to combat gypsy moths.

The 2011 Treatment Blocks have been finalized.
There are 15 treatment blocks (12) City of Madison, (1) City of Monona, (2) Town of Middleton
with a total of 907 acres. In mid-May to early June, a small low-flying airplane will apply
Foray®, a bacterial insecticide containing Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk). Btk is a
naturally occurring strain of soil bacteria that produces proteins that interact with bacteria
in gypsy moth caterpillars’ digestive tracts to cause 90-95% mortality. Commonly used by
organic gardeners to control pests, Btk has no apparent toxicity to people, animals, or
insects other than caterpillars.
