2007 BUILD Progress Report

The 2007 BUILD Progress Report lists the outcomes generated with Dane County's investment in BUILD planning grants since County Executive Kathleen Falk launched the program in 1999.

Since the inception of the BUILD program in 1999, Dane County has awarded 66 grants totaling $997,370 to 28 different municipalities. These projects also show that the BUILD program objective of making better use of existing infrastructure attracts significant public and private sector investment. From 1999-2007, every dollar of BUILD funding has led to an average re-investment into the community of one hundred and seventy-three dollars.

The Dane County Better Urban InfilL Development (BUILD) program provides grant funding to local municipalities to plan infill developments. Infill development is defined as the economic use of vacant land, or restoration or rehabilitation of existing structures or infrastructure, in already urbanized areas where water, sewer, and other public services are in place, that maintains the continuity of the original community fabric. BUILD grants help pay for planning consultants who assist communities with preparation of infill plans. The Application Guide provides information to help municipalities prepare applications to the 2009 BUILD program for infill development planning projects.

Authorizing Plans and Policies

  • The Dane County Comprehensive Plan (2007) - Land Use Goal Number One: Promote the redevelopment of lands with existing infrastructure and public services and the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing residential, commercial and industrial structures.
  • Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, Design Dane! (1998) - “The county should help cities and villages which want to take advantage of re-development opportunities. With the BUILD Program, initiated in 1998, Dane County will actively assist communities in planning for such opportunities.”

Governing Bodies

The activities of the BUILD program are guided by the Dane County Executive, the Dane County Board of Supervisors, and the BUILD Advisory Committee.
