"BIG BOX ORDINANCES IN DANE COUNTY" In October 2003 Dane County hosted a conference, Big Boxes in Dane County. The conference presented information to about 100 people about impacts, regulations, design, regional issues, and development options of big box development. As development pressures for big boxes continue in the county, a number of communities are preparing ordinances to help ensure that such developments become community assets. The Ordinance workshop was a follow-up to the October conference, focusing more specifically on big box ordinances. It explored ordinances adopted or in progress in four communities in the county, examined the potential for big box development in other communities, and discussed the possibility of shaping big box development in the county through ordinance requirements.
On October 17, 2003, Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk and the BUILD Advisory Committee sponsored the "Big Boxes in Dane County" conference at Greenway Station, Middleton. Local and national speakers examined in detail the impacts of big box development on local communities, and options available to address those impacts through design and development.
