Starting the Permit Application Process

Starting the process, step 1 STEP ONE: You will need a valid Tax Parcel Number for the parcel of land on which the zoning process (for example, building a house or rezoning from agricultural to commercial use) will take place.
  1. You may enter the tax parcel number directly, if you know it.
  2. If you do not know your Tax Parcel Number, click here to go to the AccessDane Dane County property information site to find the parcel number you need.

To continue the permit application process, please select the type of permit for which you are applying from the list. Click on the permit or application type for a description of the permit or application and links to instructions on how to apply for that permit or application.

Select a permit or application type from the items at the left.
  • A Dane County Zoning Permit is required to build or rebuild all or part of a home, accessory building, commercial building and most other structures, even if you are only replacing all or part of a building exactly as it existed before.
  • In general, any structural addition or any addition to the floor area of a building does need a Zoning Permit.
  • Zoning Permits are not usually required for work involving new roof shingles, gutters, soffits, siding, doors or windows (except for new or replacement bay or bow windows or the like).
  • In most Towns, a Building Permit must be obtained from the Town Building Inspector or Clerk after you have the Dane County Zoning Permit.

Please be advised that additional information may be required before a Dane County Zoning Permit can be issued for your project. In addition, other permits issued by Dane County or other agencies may also be required.
