At approximately 6:50 pm on Tuesday, July 20th, members of the Dane County Tactical Response Team (TRT), as well as the Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) responded to assist McFarland Police with an armed and barricaded subject at 5312 Broadhead Street in the village of McFarland.
The 47-year-old man had been involved in a domestic incident earlier in the day, where family members became concerned for their safety and called police. When McFarland Police responded to the home, the man refused to leave, and barricaded himself in the home with several firearms at his disposal. The standoff continued for several hours and Law enforcement made repeated attempts to bring the subject out peacefully.
At approximately 10:55 pm, as members of the Dane County TRT attempted to place a camera inside the window of the residence to monitor the mans physical state, the subject fired his weapon at deputies, who then returned fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dane County Coroner.
The incident remains under investigation, and an autopsy is planned for later today to determine the cause and manner of death. In addition to the criminal investigation, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an administrative investigation that coincides with any deputy involved critical incident. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is also working with the Dane County District Attorney’s Office who will, as a matter of standard practice, review the case. A total of 13 deputies have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
