At approximately 2:45 pm today, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the Road Star Inn, located at 6900 Seybold Road in the town of Middleton, for a report of shots fired in the parking lot.

When deputies arrived, employees at the Road Star Inn informed them that the suspect was inside one of the hotel rooms.  Deputies secured the area, established a perimeter, and then made contact with the suspect by telephone.  The man told deputies he was not coming out and would not surrender.  Sheriff’s deputies were in the hallway of the hotel outside of the man’s room when he suddenly exited the room armed with both a handgun and a shotgun.  The deputies ordered the man to drop his weapons, but instead he fired at least once, at which time one of the deputies returned fire.  The suspect was struck multiple times and deputies immediately began rendering aide to the man in the hallway of the hotel.  The man was quickly transported to a local hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery.  None of the deputies were physically injured in the incident.

At this time, crime scene unit deputies and detectives are processing the scene and conducting witness interviews.  As in any officer involved shooting, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is treating this as a critical incident whereas both a criminal investigation and an administrative review will be conducted.

Madison Police also responded to the scene to assist.  Further details on the incident and the suspect’s identity and condition will be provided as the information becomes available.
