Recycling and Solid Waste Compost Sites

Yard wastes are banned from disposal at all landfills in the State of Wisconsin. To provide a method of recycling yard waste, Dane County operates three yard waste compost sites. All sites are available for Dane County residents to bring non-woody yard waste. All material must be removed from bags prior to dumping. There is no charge for dropping off material.

We DO NOT ACCEPT any of the following materials:

• Brush (please check with your local municipality for proper disposal)
• Dirt
• Rocks
• Food Waste, including compostable paper and plastics
• Christmas wreaths or garlands (because of the metal wire)
• Animal manure or pet waste
• Trash of any sort

Sod is acceptable for disposal at the compost site, provided that all soil not attached directly to the root system is removed.

Finished compost is also available for sale to the general public. This material is screened to remove debris greater than approximately ½” in size. Dane County does not deliver material, but can load any open top vehicle. No appointments are necessary. Screened compost is generally available April through November at both the Westport and Verona sites.

Lesser quantities can be purchased for the price of $1.00 per approximate cubic foot.

WESTPORT SITE HOURS: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday - 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please allow enough time to have all transactions completed by closing time.	Located at 5254 STH 19 (Across from Sparby's Garden Center and Christmas Barn). Two miles east of Waunakee. Operator and end loader on site during open hours.
VERONA SITE HOURS: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday - 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please allow enough time to have all transactions completed by closing time.	Located adjacent to old landfill at Badger Prairie Park (Take USH 18-151 one toward Verona. Exit Business District and turn right to Badger Prairie Health Care Center/Badger Prairie Park parking lot. Turn right at compost sign and follow gravel road to site. Operator and end loader on site during open hours.
RODEFELD SITE DROP OFF ONLY HOURS: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. Saturday, 8:00am – 10:45am	Located at 7102 Hwy. 12 & 18 one-half mile east of 1-90. Across from Yahara hills Golf Course.

Home Composting:

Besides the use of these compost facilities, homeowners may find that home compost systems are more convenient, saving both the time and effort of using the County facilities, while also producing usable compost. Information on home composting is available at local libraries, garden and hardware stores or from the County.
