As part of our effort to strengthen the economic and environmental vitality of our communities, Dane County is beginning a study of whether and where public transport can provide better travel alternatives in an economic manner. More specifically, the Commuter Rail Feasibility Study will consider commuter rail service options to provide improved public transit in Dane County.
More specifically, this study will evaluate the potential feasibility of regional commuter rail service in four corridors (segments between the western suburbs through the central isthmus and the eastern suburbs, as well as a north-south transit corridor). Working as partners, Dane County, the City of Madison, and Wisconsin Department of Transportation will use the Feasibility Study to develop a broader base of technical information about the current freight railroad system and how it might be able to accommodate commuter rail service in addition to freight functions. The study will enable local officials and area residents to better understand the positive and negative aspects of such multiple use of these transportation corridors.
The Feasibility Study is an important precursor to a more comprehensive Major Investment Study (MIS). The MIS will result from a carefully structured process involving community development, transportation, and environmental issues, with ;many opportunities for public involvement. A MIS involves a detailed comparison of several transportation alternatives.
