1 For detailed information on federal benefits, visit the United States Department of Veterans Affairs at: http://www.va.gov/landing2_vetsrv.htm

2 For detailed information on state benefits, visit the Wisconsin Department of Veteran Affairs at: http://www.dva.state.wi.us/benefits.asp. Generally, to qualify for benefits, veterans must have entered service on active duty from Wisconsin or have been a resident for at least 12 consecutive months after entry or reentry into service. Veterans who received dishonorable discharges are not eligible.

In Wisconsin, state law protects the privacy and confidentiality of veteran's DD214s filed with the county. According to WI Statutes 45.21, "The certificate shall be accessible only to the person or dependents, the county veterans service officer, department of veterans affairs, or any person with written authorization from the person discharged or dependents." Any DD214s that the WI Department of Veterans Affairs or the county veterans service offices have in their possession are also confidential documents under state law.
