Southwest WI Grazing Network - Pasture Walk
- 07/16/2019 1:00 pm
Steve and Lynda purchased their farm 1997 and seasonally milk ~75 purebred Jersey cattle. While Jerseys are considered more heat tolerant than other dairy breeds, they purchased a portable shade structure last season. Steve was expecting shade to help manage and distribute pasture fertility better, abate summer heat and keep cows cleaner with shade structure. He observed that cows settle better but that cattle congregating under the shade resulted in some pasture damage last season. This discussion will focus on the value of shade on pasture, pasture recovery from shade use last year, seeding mixes and other observations in the 2nd season of use.
