Winter Fun and Outdoor Gear Demo This Saturday: A Great Day to Play in the Park!
Dane County Parks & Sierra Club Four Lake Group Partner to Provide Opportunity to Try New Outdoor Activities this Winter

MADISON, January 20, 2022 - From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. this Saturday, January 22, Dane County Parks and the Sierra Club Four Lake Group will host a Winter Fun and Outdoor Gear Demo at William G. Lunney Lake Farm County Park to provide Dane County residents and visitors the opportunity to try new outdoor activities. It will be a great, family-friendly day to have some winter fun.

There will be opportunities to try snowshoeing, learn about winter camping and ice fishing, and much more. Visitors can bring their own cross country skis and explore park trails or take a walk with family or friends and find all the items on the winter scavenger hunt list (eyes and camera only). And of course, hot cocoa will be provided to warm folks up!

“This is a great time of year to try something new outdoors,” said Liz Wessel, volunteer with the Sierra Club Four Lakes Group. “Sometimes I just want someone to show me the way or how to use equipment. It took me a long time to strap a pair of snowshoes on, but I really enjoyed it once I did,” continued Wessel.

“Dane County Parks is excited to be an event partner,” says Joleen Stinson, Interim Dane County Parks Director. “We hope this event introduces people to new and exciting winter activities that they can do in our park system.”

Planned Activities Include:

  • Ice fishing demonstration - find out what is needed to ice fish and ask questions (no lake access permit required during event).
  • Learn about winter camping - demonstration with fire pit.
  • Give snow shoeing a try! Staff will have snowshoes available to test. The Friends of Capital Springs will be at the event and available to lead short snowshoe hikes.
  • Bring your own cross country skis and explore the ski trails (no ski permit required during event).
  • Winter Scavenger Hunt (eyes/camera only).
  • Wisconsin Salt Wise - demonstration of tools to reduce winter salt use.
  • Guided Nature Hikes - taking place at 11:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 12:30 p.m.

Location:
William G. Lunney Lake Farm Park, Shelter #1 (4330 Libby Rd, Madison). Parking will be available at Shelter #1. Ice fishing demonstration: Lake access at the end of Libby Road (no lake access permit required during event)
