County Executive Falk Announces Supermarket of Veterans Benefits to be held May 17-18 at Alliant Energy Center

Veterans can apply for an array of federal, state, and local benefits at one convenient location during a Supermarket of Veterans Benefits to be held Friday, May 17 from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alliant Energy Center Exhibition Hall (next to the Dane County Veterans Memorial Coliseum).
“Veterans have done so much for all of us,” said Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk. “We are proud of our military veterans and we want to make sure they get every benefit they have coming to them. I hope veterans from all over south central Wisconsin attend, including many of the 33,000 who live in Dane County.”
At this one-stop shop for benefits, veterans can:
-- Apply for federal VA health care and prescription drug benefits
-- Apply for disability compensation, education and job training grants, personal loans, home improvement loans and home mortgage loans
-- Get help in obtaining military medals and records
-- Find out about nursing home care and community-based residential care for veterans and their spouses, get military retiree information, and pre-register for burial in state veterans cemeteries
-- Receive a free health screening, and apply for Badger Care for families without health insurance.
The Supermarket of Veterans Benefits is sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) in partnership with local county veterans service offices, other county offices, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Job Centers, local schools and other state and federal agencies.
Dane County is offering cost free space for the Veterans Supermarket at the Alliant Energy Center.
On May 17, a representative from the French Consulate's office out of Chicago will present certificates to WWII vets who served in France.
"We hope that veterans and their families will attend the supermarket where they can apply for the federal and state benefits they've earned. Eligibility requirements have changed over the years, so veterans now may be able to get benefits that they've been denied in the past," says WDVA Secretary Raymond G. Boland.
