County Executive Falk, Mayor Cieslewicz Issue Statement on Ho Chunk Indian Gaming Compact
April 25, 2003
Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk and Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz today issued the following statements in response to the Ho Chunk Nation gaming compact released by the Wisconsin Department of Administration.
“Personally, I am skeptical about the merits of locating a casino in Dane County,” said County Executive Falk. “When the statewide referendum on gambling was approved by voters 10 years ago, Dane County voters actually voted against gambling by a nearly two to one margin.”
The Dane County vote on prohibiting gambling expansion was 65,521 to 37,548.
“I said during the campaign that I am against casino gambling and my position has not changed,” said Cieslewicz. “I do not believe casinos, with their societal costs, are the way to build the local economy.”
The mayor and county executive have asked the city attorney, corporation counsel and other staff to review the compact language. They both expect to hear from representatives of the Ho Chunk Nation and other community members in the coming weeks.
