Acquisition expands public access to fishery, equestrian trail extension Dane County government is poised to help a local outdoor club with a land acquisition aimed at increasing public access to Sugar River area fishing and hunting opportunities. The Deer Creek Sports and Conservation Club recently applied for financial assistance from the Dane County conservation fund to buy 70 acres in the county’s southwest region near the Mt. Vernon State Fishery Area. The property is within the Sugar River Natural Resource Area. “I am pleased to support the Deer Creek club’s efforts to secure these acres which are important for water quality protection and wildlife habitat,” Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk said after she signed the County Board-approved resolution. “In addition to the environmental benefits, the public will see greater hunting and fishing opportunities because of this acquisition. “And this purchase also will allow for the continuation of the equestrian trail that links to nearby Donald County Park,” Falk said. The purchase price for the fee title acquisition is $361,000, and Dane County is providing $103,081 for the buy. # # #
