*Dane County Travel Advisory*
February 17, 2008
Madison, WI. February 17, 2008.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office has responded to numerous vehicle slide-offs and non-injury crashes since midnight. Roadways around Dane County are ice and snow covered making travel treacherous.
The Sheriff’s Office is recommending people stay off the roadways. If motorists cannot avoid driving, then please take precautions when heading out.
Ø Check your local weather reports before leaving.
Ø Be especially aware of ice on bridges and overpasses.
Ø Always make sure your vehicle has plenty of gas.
Ø Maintain a winter survival kit in your vehicle with such items as a flashlight, shovel, snow boots, extra clothing and an ice scraper.
Ø Let someone know your travel route. In the event you do not arrive on time, law enforcement officials will know where to search for you and your vehicle.
Ø Be aware of your location in the event you need to summon help or call 911.
Ø Plan ahead and select your route before you leave home or business.
Ø Give yourself plenty of travel time.
Ø If the storm becomes too much for you, please take refuge immediately.
Motorist safety is a top priority for the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. Please drive safe, slow down, allow for plenty of travel time, use your seatbelt and drive sober.
