Falk Announces $1 Million to Restore and Preserve Wetlands

Madison – Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk today announced a $1 million grant from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA), of which Dane County will receive $65,000, for the restoration and preservation of wetlands and grassland throughout Dane County, including the Jenni and Kyle Reserve within in the E-way, Lower Mud Lake, Badger Prairie and Capitol Springs. “Our wetlands are some of our most treasured natural resources, and are part of what gives Dane County its character. This grant allows us to protect these wonderful areas,” said Falk. The 2005 grant request was from a partnership of ten conservation organizations and agencies, including Dane County. The program’s intent is the long-term protection of wetlands and bird and waterfowl habitat. The partnership’s membership includes the Madison Audubon Society, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Dane County Parks, Ducks Unlimited, Natural Heritage Land Trust, Wisconsin Waterfowlers Association, private landowners, Pheasants Forever and the Nature Conservancy. The partnership also received an NAWCA grant in 2002 of $1 million, of which Dane County received $122,000 for the preservation and restoration of land purchased in the Door Creek wetlands. # # #
