Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk today (12/23/05) announced the purchase of 31 acres at Donald County Park, near the Village of Mount Horeb. “This purchase allows us to prevent erosion from steep slopes that drain into Deer Creek, along with beautiful views,” said Falk. “Also, we can now improve recreational access to a corner of the park that was previously difficult to reach. We’re excited to provide the opportunity for Dane County residents to better explore and experience the phenomenal Donald County Park.” The property will provide improved access to Deer Creek, a Class II trout stream, with native populations of brook trout, along with expansion of recreational trails in the western edge of the park. Protection of the slopes and hilltops from development is important for the continued health of the creek and the continuation of groundwater recharge and water quality functions. The property contains a high-quality restored prairie and woodlot, which have been carefully maintained by the sellers, Marion and Barbara Namenwirth. “I feel sure that in some way the wonderful former owners, the Diems from Switzerland -- Mr. Diem attended to bees without gloves because he ´knew his bees´ -- and all the unknown Native Americans who for centuries moved gracefully through these woods and fields, rejoice with us,” commented Barbara Namenwirth on the sale. The Dane County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase in early December. # # #
