DANE ARTS AWARDS $119,017

Forty-eight grants supporting arts and cultural activities countywide with public-private funds

 

The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission announces the award of 36 project grants totaling $81,897 for community arts, cultural, and local history programs, 3 capital grant totaling $7,970, and 9 Distinctly Dane grants totaling $29,150 honoring Dane County’s recent 175^th anniversary celebration.  In the Commission’s first Grant Cycle of the year, county dollars combined with funds from CUNA Mutual Group, Electronic Theatre Controls, Endres Manufacturing Company Foundation, Dan Erdman, The Evjue Foundation, Inc., charitable arm of The Capital Times, W. Jerome Frautschi Foundation, Madison Gas & Electric Foundation, and Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation will be matched by over $1.6 million from other sources.  Grant recipients follow.

Project Grants

Arts-in-Education

Madison Children’s Museum, $750, for Nature Photography Camp:  Sharing Between Generations, inviting seniors and middle school-aged youth to learn together while having fun with photography.

 

American Players Theatre, $4,000, supporting Student Matinees & Workshops, providing opportunities for students from elementary to high school ages  to see live classical theater.

 

Madison Youth Choirs, $1,500, in support of Community Outreach School Tour sharing choral performances with peers in schools countywide.

 

Madison Symphony Orchestra, $4,000, for Up Close & Musical, bringing the Hunt String Quartet to kindergarten-3^rd grade students in their classrooms for interactive lessons teaching musical concepts and enjoyment.

 

Sherman Middle & Shabazz High Schools, $1,977, for Africa Connects, using beadwork to create symbolic link between African cultures and Madison teens, inspired by Chazen Museum of Art’s collection.

 

Dance

Nicole Roerick Collective, $500, for a new performance opportunity helping an emerging young local dance company present new works to our community.

 

Madison Contemporary Vision Dance, $1,700, supporting Once Upon A Time telling traditional fairy tales through original artistic contemporary dance.

 

Li Chiao-Ping Dance, $1,200, in support of Summer Dance Performance 2012 including works choreographed by Li Chiao-Ping featuring community performers of all ages and abilities.

 

Dance Wisconsin, $1,500, for New Works 2012 showcasing innovative dance pieces created by local choreographers and performed by pre-professional local dance company.

 

Madison Ballet, $4,000, supporting Movement in Your World workshops in 40 Headstart classrooms countywide offering creative movement experiences for young children.

 

Kanopy Dance Theatre, $4,000, for End Times presenting collection of pieces choreographed by guest artists and local talent.

 

 

Multidisciplinary Arts/Culture

Opera for the Young, $2,250, in support of Build Your Own Opera uniting music, theater and design as professional teaching artists engage children in creating their own opera.

 

Overture Center Foundation, $3,000, for Ballet Folklorico de Mexico 2012’s local residency.

 

Wisconsin Council for the Blind & Visually Impaired, $2,000, in support of Bloomin’ Literature, a collaboration with Dane County Library Service promoting accessibility to literature through a kiosk display and demonstrations, travelling exhibition and Bloomsday celebration. 

 

African Association of Madison, $1,700, supporting Africa Fest 2012, a local festival of African folklife showcasing educational and celebratory aspects of African culture and traditions.

 

 

Music

Madison Opera, $3,200, in support of matinee of A Masked Ball for students from schools countywide.

 

Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras, $3,000, for Eugenie Mayer Bolz Family Spring Concerts, the culminating performances of WYSO season providing opportunities for young musicians to display their talents.

 

Name That Musical with John, $1,250, providing fun interactive musical performances including quizzes and sing-a-longs in senior assisted living centers countywide.

 

Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, $3,200, for Tiempo Libre from Cubaperforming at July Concert on the Square.

 

 

con vivo!….music with life, $800, supporting Gee, Isn’t That Grand! including music by Gershwin, Gould, Glinka and Gigout. 

 

North/Eastside Senior Coalition, $1,500, for 2012 Summer Concert Series at Warner Park featuring local bands playing jazz, country, swing, big band, R&B, rock, bluegrass or Mexican music outdoors.

 

Capitol City Band Association, $1,000, in support of Summer 2012 Outreach Concerts building community by presenting concerts at Madison’s Ester Beach or Thut Park and Central WI Center for the Developmentally Disabled.

 

Jazz at Five, $3,000, supporting Jazz at Five free outdoor summertime concerts at the top of State Street.

 

Monona Terrace Community Programs, $1,500, for Tunes at Monona Terrace, a free concert series attracting seniors and dance enthusiasts who enjoy a wide range of musical styles.

 

Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society, $4,000, in support of Mixology:  BDDS’s 21^st Chamber Music Festival bringing musicians from around the country to perform a varied repertoire incorporating surprises and fun.

 

Madison Blues Society, $1,200, for 10^th Annual Blues Picnic at Warner Park featuring family-friendly music, food, beverages, souvenirs and raffles. 

 

Madison Early Music Festival, $2,000, for Madison Early Music Festival 2012”s The Newberry Consort performing Beautiful Dreamer:  The Music of Lincoln’s America that features rarely-heard music from 1860s America.

 

 

Theater

Forward Theater, $500, in support of a staged reading of Oatsland by local Wisconsin Wrights winning playwright, Sam White.

 

Music Theatre of Madison, $2,650, for Madison premiere of Parade, a contemporary musical about Leo Frank, a Northern Jew accused of murder in 1913.

 

Madison Shakespeare Company, $2,000, for Shakespeare in the Park:  Julius Caesar bringing to life for local audiences the classic, thrilling historical drama set in Ancient Rome.

 

Madison Savoyards, $3,000, for The Pirates of Penzance, the group’s 50^th annual summer production.

 

Wisconsin Union Theater, $2,400, for The Acting Company Residency including performances of As You Like It, along with a master class and engagement of local high school students with an acclaimed professional theatre troupe.

 

Friends of the Waisman Center, $3,000, supporting Waisman Center’s Children’s Theatre providing quality, diverse, educational interactive live theater performances to children and their families at modest cost in fully accessible settings.

 

Four Seasons Theatre, $2,400, in support of A Little Night Music, a Stephen Sondheim masterpiece that will showcase local singers and actors, production team and chamber orchestra.

 

 

Visual Arts

James Watrous Gallery, Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters, $3,970, supporting About Seeing, an exhibition using artworks, interactive demonstrations and gallery talks to examine the fascinating variations in how people see the world around them.

 

Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, $2,250, for one must know the animals, an exhibition drawing from the dynamic holdings of MMoCA presenting more than 100 works focusing upon the complex relationship between people and animals.

 

Capital Grants

Madison Opera, $3,000, for warehouse upgrades.

Four Lakes Traditional Music Collective, $2,875, for purchase of trailer.

Capitol City Band Association, $2,095, for purchase of copy machine.

 

 

Distinctly Dane Grants

A special grant funding opportunity honoring Dane County’s recent 175^th Anniversary Celebration.  Focus is upon our sense of place and belonging and identity as expressed by Dane County voices.  These grants showcase Dane County’s distinctive qualities, highlight and grow local assets, and nurture local creativity.

 

Madison Opera, $5,000, for Opera in the Park 2012, a local tradition featuring the Madison Opera Chorus and Madison Symphony Orchestra in a free community concert showcasing the best of opera and Broadway under the stars.

 

Children’s Theater of Madison, $4,000, supporting Young Playwrights Program, an arts-in-schools program designed to give voice to teenagers through the medium of playwriting and mentoring from teaching artists, culminating in a public performance of staged readings of selected plays.

 

Perfect Harmony Men’s Chorus, $3,000, in support of Heartlands, a song cycle created from interviews with members and friends sharing stories of life in the Midwest.

 

Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center, $3,200, for La Fete de Marquette, featuring musical artists from throughout the French-speaking world in an outdoor multi-day summer festival.

 

Token Creek Festival, $4,800, for Token Creek Festival 2012: A Sense of Place—Outdoor Serenade, a chamber music series about intersections between a special local place, art and nature.

 

Wisconsin Humanities Council, $4,000, supporting Wisconsin Book Festival, a free, five-day celebration of words, ideas, and community conversation.

 

Jeff Strahl Photography, $2,000, for Little House on the Lake, a photographic survey of cottages on Lake Mendota.

 

Mazomanie Regional Heritage Foundation, $2,400, supporting Gandy Dancer Festival 2012, a celebration of small-town heritage offering a day-long free music festival, children’s activities, games, rides, food and beverages.

 

Wisconsin Sustainable Futures Network, $750, for Little Libraries, Tiny Towns:  A Sense of Place presenting 3 new Little Free Libraries in several of Dane County’s small rural communities.
