Groups Encouraged to Apply for Thousands in Grant Dollars Available to Help Make Conservation Projects a Reality

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced today that the county is accepting applications for two grant programs offered through the Dane County Environmental Council (DCEC) designed to support projects that improve, protect, and enhance Dane County's land and water resources.

"There are many dedicated conservation organizations working to improve our environment," said Parisi. "Through these grants, we become an active partner in their work to enhance special places for Dane County's residents and visitors to enjoy."

As part of the Land and Water Legacy Initiative, the Capital Equipment Grant Program will make awards of up to $2,500 to assist with the purchase or rental of equipment or services that will benefit Dane County conservation projects. In addition, the Community Partners Grant Program will provide up to $1,000 for projects that promote environmental education, conservation, and restoration in Dane County.

Each dollar in county grant funding is estimated to generate three dollars in matching funds for grant recipients and their projects.  Last year, the county awarded more than $11,000 in grant dollars that helped local organizations leverage a total of $35,666.27.

The DCEC is appointed by Parisi and approved by the County Board.  The Council's mission is to assist groups in recognizing and protecting natural areas in Dane County and to assume an educational role in the awareness, conservation and protection of the environment.

"The Environmental Council plays an important role in protecting Dane County's land and water resources by partnering with community groups that work to improve our natural environment,” said Shelly Allness, Chair of the DCEC.  “I encourage local organizations to join us in enhancing the natural areas that make Dane County unique."

The programs, administered by the DCEC, are competitive.  Application materials are due on Thursday, February 28, 2013.  Grant applications and guidelines can be downloaded from the Dane County Environmental Council website at: http://www.countyofdane.com/commissions/environmentalcouncil.  For more information, contact Mindy Habecker at habecker@co.dane.wi.usor call 608-224-3718.
