A free, updated map of Dane County’s natural resources and outdoor recreation treasures, from county parks to state and federal trails, is now available for families to pick-up and enjoy, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced today.

For the first time, the county will be offering its map in two sizes – a standard size, roughly the size of a roadmap, and a new mini size that can be carried easily at all times in a bike or canoe bag, or in a back pocket.

“In Dane County we’re extremely lucky to live minutes from any number of outdoor activities and beautiful landscapes,” said Parisi.  “Our updated recreation maps, and especially our new mini-map, will make it even easier for a family to plan a day outdoors on the weekend, or go on a spur of the moment adventure.”

The updated map side of the brochure shows federal, state, and county-owned lands open to outdoor recreation, as well as the off road regional multi-use trail network throughout Dane County.

The flip-side details all of the year-round outdoor recreation available for residents and visitors to Dane County’s parks.  The county’s 31 diverse parks offer everything from cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails, to disc golf, dog parks, and hiking, biking, canoe and kayaking trails.

The map was developed by the Dane County Land & Water Resources Department.  Copies are available at the Lyman Anderson Agriculture and Conservation Center, the Lussier Heritage Center, the City-County Building and the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau.  The map is available online at www.countyofdane.com/lwrd/parks/.

A new Dane County Parks app is also in the works through funding for technology upgrades in the County Executive’s 2013 budget.  Once complete, the app will make planning for a day on the trails or online campsite reservations easy to access from the palm of your hand.
