The Dane County Sheriff’s Office wants to inform citizens of a recent phone scam using scare tactics by law enforcement imposters.

Over the past few weeks, several citizens have called the primary telephone number to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office administrative office, claiming that they received a phone call or a message in reference to a variety of legal issues.  The scammer then directs them to immediately call the main number to the Sheriff’s Office for follow-up.  The scammers claim they are calling to collect a debt or back taxes, and then threaten that an arrest warrant will be issued if the call is not returned in a timely manner.  In the event the victim answers the phone, they are often asked for personal information about his or her family members.

It’s important for the public to know, that no local law enforcement agency collects fees in this manner, nor would law enforcement contact citizens by telephone and ask for this type of personal information.  The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is making every attempt to investigate the source of these phone calls.  If you receive a call or message like this, and the caller ID shows 608-284-6800, please report it to our tip line at 608-284-6900.  We ask that you DO NOT call the 6800 number.
