Experienced and Beginning Players Encouraged to Visit Nationally Recognized County Disc Golf Courses for Free All Day Saturday

The county is kicking off the 2014 disc golf season this Saturday with free admission all day to the county’s nationally recognized disc golf courses near Lake Farm County Park  and in Token Creek County Park, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced today.

“Dane County’s park system offer great amenities, tailored to fit the needs and interests of our residents and visitors,” said Parisi. “Our disc golf courses are some of the best in the nation – we hope people will come out to enjoy them on free golf Saturday and beyond.”

Free admission to the courses with no permit required will be offered this Saturday, April 26thfrom dawn when courses open until the dusk when courses close.

County partners, the Mad City Disc Golf club will be on hand at the Vallarta-Ast course in Token Creek County Park in the morning to sell course passes, sign people up for club memberships, and to help answer questions about disc golfing and the course. Members will be at the Capital Springs course (near Lake Farm County Park) Saturday afternoon.

"Mad City Disc Golf is excited to celebrate our 24thanniversary and partner with Dane County Parks to kick off the 2014 disc golf season,” said Seth Johnson, President of Mad City Disc Golf.  “We encourage disc golfers to take advantage of the free day at both the Vallarta-Ast and the Capital Springs disc golf courses, and to visit with our representatives at both courses throughout the day to learn about our efforts to promote disc golf in Dane County and beyond."

Disc golf is a rapidly growing sport that enjoys a large following in Dane County. The county offers two courses challenging enough for veteran players and accessible enough for beginners.

The Capital Springs Disc Golf Course, located within the  Capital Springs Recreation Area  at  3398 Lake Farm Road in Madison, was opened last summer. The course features 18 holes surrounded by picturesque prairie restoration areas located right off the Capital City State Trail.

The Vallarta-Ast Disc Golf Course, located in Token Creek County Park at 6200 US Highway 51 in DeForest, opened in 2001. The course was expanded in 2012 and now features 27 holes, including a challenging “island hole.”

Both courses were designed with the help of local disc golf pros. The Vallarta-Ast course has received national recognition, hosting a number of Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) sanctioned events including the popular Mad City Open.

A permit is required to golf at both courses except for  Saturday’s kick-off event. A Dane County disc golf permit is accepted at both Capital Springs and Token Creek disc golf courses, but is not accepted at City of Madison disc golf courses.  An annual disc golf permit is $48, and a daily permit $8.
