Madison – Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk today announced a $3,768,215 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for the completion of the improvement of a runway safety area at the Dane County Regional Airport. The grant will help cover the costs of the project, which expands the safety zones beyond the two runways along the airport’s northwest edge.

The project relocates a portion of Starkweather Creek, to accomplish environmental enhancements including improvements of the Cherokee Marsh, the reduction of railway “footprint” through wetlands and the construction of a flood plain to improve storm water management. The project also brings the airport into compliance with FAA standards that were previously subject to waivers.

“Thanks to the hard work of our congressional delegation, particularly Senator Kohl and Congresswoman Baldwin, we are able to move this important project forward without delay,” said Falk. “This runway safety project will help keep Dane County at the forefront of passenger safety while adding environmental improvements to the area.”

“Growing numbers of travelers and local businesses rely on the Dane County Regional Airport each day, making it a prominent part of the community and the region’s economy. These investments in safety and upgrades are vital in keeping the airport operating at optimal conditions,” Kohl said. Kohl, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, had identified this project as a priority for funding and included it in the FY2004 budget.

"Senator Kohl and I are delighted we secured funding for this project. Improvements to Dane County Regional Airport are a key component to our area's economic development. This partnership with the federal government will enhance the facility even more and benefit both travelers and businesses in south central Wisconsin," said Rep. Baldwin.

"This federal funding will allow the airport to continue to expand and improve," Governor Doyle said. "The growth of this airport is very good news for people who live and do business in and around Madison, and I'm pleased that these funds will allow us to take the next step."
