Fran Barman-Paulson, a collections specialist with the Dane County Department of Human Services, was recognized today (1/31/02) as the recipient of the 2001 Karen L. Brickner Memorial Award.

The award, which was presented in a ceremony at the Badger Prairie Health Care Center in Verona, is sponsored by the county’s Women’s Issues Committee. The award honors former county employee Karen L. Brickner who died in 1995, by recognizing a county employee who demonstrates active participation in county affairs, serves as a role model for other county employees, and exhibits leadership qualities.

“Fran Barman-Paulson is committed to helping others through her involvement with a number of charitable events. She puts the human touch in human services and has helped many people in our community through her actions,” said County Executive Kathleen Falk.

Barman-Paulson has helped coordinate county drives for food, school supplies, Easter baskets, and books, in addition to working at the county picnic/Walk-a-Thon. She also participates in the American Heart Association and March of Dimes’ Walk-a-thons and is a regular donor at Dane County-sponsored blood drives.

“Fran’s commitment to the people of Dane County doesn’t end with her formal duties,” said human services director Charity Eleson. “She is committed to making a difference in people’s lives by taking on a number of important events which help meet the basic needs of some of our county’s most underprivileged people.”

Barman-Paulson is also an active member of Dane County Employees Union Local 720, serving on its executive board and bargaining committees and as a union steward. She also edits the Local 720 newsletter.
