Yard wastes are banned from disposal at all landfills in the State of Wisconsin. To provide a method of recycling yard waste, Dane County operates a yard waste compost sites. The compost site is available for Dane County residents to bring non-woody yard waste. All material must be removed from bags prior to dumping. There is no charge for dropping off material. Finished compost material is no longer available, effective July 1, 2014.
We DO NOT ACCEPT any of the following materials:
- Brush (please check with your local municipality for proper disposal)
- Dirt
- Rocks
- Food Waste, including compostable paper and plastics
- Christmas wreaths or garlands (because of the metal wire)
- Animal manure or pet waste
- Trash of any sort
Sod is acceptable for disposal at the compost site, provided that all soil not attached directly to the root system is removed.

Home Composting:
Besides the use of these compost facilities, homeowners may find that home compost systems are more
convenient, saving both the time and effort of using the County facilities, while also producing usable
compost. Information on home composting is available at local libraries, garden and hardware stores or
from the County.

individual speak on composting at one of your meetings or events, please contact:
