Welcome to the Mental Health Response Team Website

Dane County is one of 120 communities nationally designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to receive a Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) award. The purpose of this planning and capacity building award is to enhance preparedness for large scale events such as terrorism or natural disasters.

Under the MMRS grant, the Mental Health Response Team (MHRT) has been developed to offer disaster related supportive services to victims, family members, responders and affected communities. In the event of a large scale critical event or natural disaster, MHRT volunteer mental health professionals and paraprofessionals are available to respond to the disaster site, family assistance center, schools, neighborhood centers, town halls and other public venues. MHRT works in cooperation with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and other public and private organizations.

From 2002-2005, 123 professionals and paraprofessionals, experienced in providing crisis intervention or community mental health services, were trained as MHRT members. In 2009, we will be certifying new members who are interested in becoming part of the Mental Health Response Team. Please see the link for MHRT Application form.

We plan to offer trainings on early mental health interventions in disaster response including: triage, psychological first aid; psycho-education; coping skills; and, referrals for higher levels of care. We hope to have guest presenters from Dane County Emergency Management, Dane County Coroner’s office, local law enforcement and other community agencies who would become involved in the event of a disaster.

We invite you to be a part of this national effort for communities to be prepared for large scale events and natural disasters. Please feel free to contact us with your questions and ideas.
