The public hearing on the proposed 2013 Dane County budget is scheduled for Monday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in room 201 of the City-County Building.  The public is invited to attend and express their views about county spending priorities for the coming year.

The proposed 2013 Dane County budget authorizes a total of $522 million for capital and operating expenditures.  The budget is financed by $333.7 million in outside revenues and borrowing, $44.6 million of sales tax, and $143.1 million in county tax levy funds.  The proposed budget increases the county’s net property tax rate from $2.87 in 2012 to $3.00 for 2013, which will be an increase of $9.48 on the average Madison home.

Several issues have generated discussion in the three weeks since the County Executive introduced his budget proposal on October 1st.  Approaches to address low-income housing needs and homeless issues remain in the forefront, in addition to initiatives to protect and water quality.

“As with all budgets, we strive to meet the needs of county citizens while practicing fiscal restraint,” said County Board Chair Scott McDonell.  “The public hearing provides citizens with a chance to express their concerns to the County Board and to influence the process,” he added.

County Board committees will complete their consideration of amendments to the proposed budget over the next two weeks.  The full Board will begin budget deliberations in mid-November.
