Saturday Work Project at City-County Building will Lead to Greater Energy Efficiency

A roughly five-hour Saturday morning maintenance project involving the heat transfer equipment atop the City-County Building and a crane will result in increased operating efficiency and potential savings worth thousands of dollars.
Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians traveling near the City-County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., should be aware a crane and dumpsters will be placed on Doty street around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. They should be cleared by noon.
“The county always is looking for ways to save energy and tax dollars,” Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk said. “We’re optimistic the project will do both. And thanks in advance to the folks traveling Doty Street on Saturday for taking extra care while this work is being done.”
Workers will be working to remove and then replace the heat transfer equipment housed in the silver building visible atop the roof on the western side of the building facing Carroll Street.
The upgrade of the cooling equipment will mean a 7 percent increase in operating efficiency. There is a chance for a one-time savings of $500,000 and annual operating savings of $23,000 if it is determined the changes will allow the County to abandon use of an aging chiller, also atop the roof, and rely solely upon the chiller in the basement.
Motorists should be able to travel Doty Street, which may be reduced to one lane during the project work.
